- CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY WEEK

DATE:                         THURSDAY, 11TH JANUARY 2024

TITLE:                        CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY WEEK

CATEGORY:            CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY

Various organizations operating within Africa are set to participate in the CCA CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY WEEK on the 9th – 11th July 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya. Focusing on ecological responsibility, the theme of the event is Climate Action Through the Lens of Sustainable Business.

Honing on the event’s environmental focus, Sheida Mutuku, the event organizer and CEO of Woodside Africa Group LLC rationalizes, ‘That the earth is the only home we have right now is indeed an exceedingly sobering fact. That solid and genuine environmental efforts must be incorporated in every aspect of life is already a foregone conclusion. That Corporate Africa has the spotlighted platform to influence actions and behaviors that mitigate climate change is the reality of our current moments.’

She adds, ‘This event is an ideal platform for top sustainable businesses operating in Africa to display and effectively focus a global spotlight on their environmental stewardship efforts that they have been engaged in over time.’

CCA Corporate Sustainability Week is an intricate Pan African Sustainability Showcase and Symposium. It is also the highlight category within a larger event – The CCA Sustainability Public Awareness Campaign – which holds a total of six categories designed to drum up public awareness and active participation in environmental issues.

Sheida reveals, ‘At least 10,000 members of the public are expected to attend the event over the 3 day duration. They will interact with leading Corporate Africa organizations and immerse in their climate action efforts. Public participation has the underlying objective of ensuring that what we do as Corporate Africa is authentic and truly impacts our environment and communities.’

To participate in the sustainability campaign, individual members of the public are also encouraged to submit climate action themed entries in the various categories including sustainable fashion, essays, photography, reels and art pieces. Winning entries in each of these categories will be bought off by CCA and it’s corporate partners at Ksh 200,000/- each.

The related event symposium, dubbed BUILDING AFRICA – will induct Corporate Africa’s Business Leaders in the CCA Corporate Sustainability Hall of Fame. It will also reveal the BUILDING AFRICA Sustainable Business coffeetable book, featuring top business leaders in Africa. Last but not least, Corporate Africa Leaders will be awarded the Architects of a Better World Award (ABWA).

Sheida says the decision to focus on environmental sustainability for this year’s corporate sustainability campaign was driven by the prevailing delicate nature of the environment that calls for all hands on deck.

Pointing out the real possible consequences of climate change Sheida poses, ‘When people die from the effects of a damaged planet, and lose their property…who will be held accountable? When 10% of the world’s population living along coastal lines is displaced by floods, who will be blamed? The famous picture of a child dying from hunger as a vulture circled above his head still haunts the world many years later. Who was held accountable? No one has yet been brought to book over this horrifying atrocity. What about the millions of people who died of hunger?’

‘So then, who will be held accountable now, and in the future, when large swathes of farmland are rendered useless by drought and desertification? Climate change effects are certainly not an act of God, they are made by the hand of man. While everyone should be responsible, the leaders of the land must be held accountable. They have every possible tool at their disposal to install comprehensive yet sensible laws that protect the planet within their respective jurisdictions.’

Corporate Citizens of Africa (CCA), is a Pan-African sustainability program that urges Africa’s business leaders to be Architects of a Better World. This is as they strive to build world-class organizations right here in Africa. The program also encourages Corporate Africa to take charge of the continent’s Sustainability Agenda.
