The world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is as exciting as is scary. That machines could possibly surpass human intelligence – a phenomenon referred to as ‘the singularity’ – is a scenario that has elicited much intrigue the world over.

Some say the singularity is just not possible. Because this will require a full understanding of the human brain, as well as the creation of consciousness. And no one can quite figure out how to do this yet, let alone what it is. God’s secret.

Others say the singularity will happen at some point in future. Because the powerful super intelligent machines will figure everything out through a run-away algorithm. And here again, further dissent arises.

Optimists foretell it will be good for the world, while others, such as Elon Musk, have predicted a doomsday scenario where machines will overrun humans and possibly kill them all. But the fact is no one really knows what will happen post the singularity. If indeed it ever happens.

For the moment, breakthrough technological innovations are popping up every day as AI capabilities are being harnessed, ushering in the first decade of the Fourth Industrial Revolution with pomp and grandeur.

Recognizing the centrality of AI in Africa’s growth and development, South Africa established a Presidential Commission for the Fourth Industrial Revolution; with a view of incorporating AI into its national development strategy.

As President Cyril Ramaphosa launched the commission at a state of the nation address he warned, ‘Unless we adapt, unless we understand the nature of the profound change that is reshaping our world and unless we readily embrace the opportunities it presents, the promise of our nation’s birth will forever remain unfulfilled.’

Firmly staking her place at the table of this all-important commission is Nomso – a nuclear scientist, engineer and entrepreneur.
